Day 2 CITC capsules Regina disposes of another No. 1 From Staff Reports BERLIN -- Well, so much for the top two divisions in Ohio. Div. III South Euclid Regina owns them. The Royals followed up a Saturday win over the No. 1 Div. I team with a 59-57 victory over Sandusky Perkins (No. 3, Div. II) at the Classic in the Country V Sunday. Duke-bound Shay Selby finished with 31 points and eight assists, while Florida State-bound 6-foot-5 Cierra Bravard tallied 24 points and nine boards. The wins should no doubt move Regina to No. 1 in the Div. III AP poll. They were No. 3 to start the week. "The coaching staff has been preaching to the kids, and I'm not making it up, is that these are all scrimmages," said Regina coach Pat Diulus, whose team is now 13-2. "We try to get the best scrimmages we can and we've got five more to go. "As I was saying in the lockerroom, we had Lakota West for an appetizer, these guys for dinner and next week we get Pickerington Central (No. 12, Div. I) for dessert. "It's a pretty tough run," Diulus added. "But it gets us ready for the February-March run." The Royals had to find a way to penetrate the Pirates' zone, which was Selby's doing, while slowing down Bravard. They did that by constantly doubling up on her with 5-foot-7 Emily Hoscilowicz (12 points) and 6-foot Mercedes Mitchell. Hoscilowicz fronted the large Bravard, while Mitchell stayed behind her in the post. It was the first time Diulus had put such a concentrated double-teaming on a player. "Coach told me before the game I needed to be in front of her the whole game," Hoscilowicz said. "So that's what I tried to do." Beth Caudill hit three timely 3s to score 10 for Perkins, while Trisha Krewson tallied 17. N. Canton Hoover 65, Lexington (Ky.) Catholic 60 Hoover (No. 10, Div. I) dropped a game to Africentric Saturday, but came back strong Sunday with a team ranked No. 9 in the latest USA Today top 25. The victory was the first for Hoover in three tries against the Knights. Brittany Orban again led the way for Hoover, scoring 28 points, while bringing down 14 rebounds, in wrapping up one of the finest careers for anyone at the Classic. Three of her games are in the top 10 individually for scoring. Guard Jessica Carpenter checked in with 20 for Hoover. The Knights got 23 points from Notre Dame-bound Natalie Novosel, who also had eight boards before fouling out. The Knights jumped into the national rankings thanks to a victory last week over South Bend Washington, a team that was No. 6 nationally at the time. That score was 73-60. Cin. Princeton 58, Copley 49 Princeton went without the services of superstar Brianna Sanders in this one, but it didn't affect the outcome as the Vikings finished the CITC V 2-0. Ariel Thomas led the way with 18 points and eight rebounds, while teammates Taylor Howell (12 points) and Jayne Cox (11, nine boards) each added double digits in scoring. Brittany Powell tallied 19 in the losing cause, while Taylor Reif had 14 and Beth Mantkowski 11. The Vikings forced 28 turnovers to set the game's pace. Cin. Winton Woods 48, Reynoldsburg 40 The Woods closed out the 2008 Classic with a 2-0 record as Cincinnati teams fared well against the rest of the state. The Warriors were paced by a 14-point, six-rebound, five-steal effort from Dayeesha Hollins, who scored 14 for a second straight CITC game. Jasmine Shaw put in 14 for the winners, who used a big fourth quarter to come away victorious. T'Shera Lucas posted 14, while Tonja Santamaria put together a 10-point game in the losing cause. Lakota West 82, Toledo Central Catholic 68 The Firebirds (No. 1, Div. I) scored a Classic record 82 points as the two teams combined for a CITC-best 150. Lakota's Amber Gray didn't set the individual scoring record, but she came close going for 29 points, nine boards and seven assists. Alexis Rogers registered 20 for the Firebirds, who shot 54 percent as a team. Toledo Central Catholic (No. 5, Div. I) got 20 points from Katelyn Nowacki and 15 points and eight rebounds from Sharise Calhoun. Brianna Jones chipped in 11 for the Irish. Cin. Mt. Notre Dame 76, Toledo Waite 42 The Cougars (No. 4, Div. I) took apart the Indians in convincing fashion to cap off an impressive two days at the CITC. They finished the weekend 2-0, the third Cincinnati team to do so. "We're coming together as a team," MND coach Dante Harlan said. "But most importantly is we're gaining trust." The team trusted post Tia McBride the most this time, as the junior went for 29 points and 11 boards. Kendall Hackney and Gabby Smith each went for 13. Waite's 6-foot-3 sophomore Natasha Howard, the No. 4 player in her class nationally, went for 11 points and seven boards in the loss. |
