The weekend of Jan. 17-19, Holmes County Ohio becomes a Mecca for some of the best girls basketball in Ohio and beyond.

Hiland High School in Berlin hosts Classic in the Country Challenge VI over the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend.

Classic in the Country VI is a three-day basketball feast, featuring 20 games, pitting some of the best teams in the State against each other, as well as a visit from the reigning small school State champion of New Jersey...

While basketball season may be far down the road for many, the crew working at creating the annual Classic in the Country girls' basketball extravaganza is working full throttle.

For the past several years, the Classic has brought more than $1 million annually into the county, and it continues to grow and gain in stature, not just in Ohio but throughout the nation, where it has been dubbed the best girls basketball showcase in the nation, and has been attended by the likes of ESPN, Nike and other national sports conglomerates, as well as hundreds of scouts and college coaches.

However, with the economy struggling, Dave Schlabach, event organizer and head coach of the Hiland Lady Hawks, said that finding support for the event has been a struggle this year...
