CitC VIII will feature three of four reigning Ohio state champions

BERLIN — The eighth Classic in the Country Challenge promises to be as exciting as the seven previous events featuring a bevy of the best girls basketball Ohio has to offer as 31 teams square off in 20 games over a three-day period, beginning Saturday, Jan. 15 through Monday, Jan. 17

Three of the four reigning state champions, (D-I Canton McKinley, D-II Hathaway Brown and D-IV Harvest Prep) are among the teams playing at this year’s event, along with several of the top-rated teams and projected powerhouses from this year. All four D-IV final 4 teams from last year will be competing at this year’s classic (Harvest Prep, Hiland, Minster and Fort Loramie). Other state powers include Twinsburg, Cincinnati Princeton, Toledo Start, Africentric, as well as local favorites West Holmes and Orrville.

Classic in the Country set for 8th installment

Three of the four reigning state champions will be on-hand at the Perry Reese Jr. Community Center this Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend for the eighth installment of the Classic in the Country. Over the past seven years, CitC has grown into the top in-season girls’ basketball in the nation. And each season, it continues to better itself.

“[Event director] Tom Jenkins continues to bring in the best talent and best teams in the state,” Hiland coach and event coordinator Dave Schlabach said. “We’re excited about another really good year.”

Will Under Armour become the first national sponsor of Classic in the Country?

Is Classic in the Country ready to take on a large national corporate sponsor? If Tom Jenkins, Dave Schlabach and the Classic staff have anything to say about it, they are more than ready. For several years, Schlabach has talked about bringing in a major sponsor to the ever-growing Classic, which is widely recognized as one of the premier girls high school basketball showcases in the nation.

The question is, can they entice a major sports-related company to join ranks with them?

If everything goes the way they hope, that will be the case for next year’s Classic in the Country IX, and the corporation joining them could well be Under Armour.
